Hector fish
February 2007-July 22, 2008

Poor little Hector fish died last night or this morning.
A sad day for me and Clark.
Well, I don't know if Clark understands or cares, but for me at least.
I don't know what happened... I changed the tanks the other night, and Clark was fine, and Hector was fine, and then the next morning he was lying on the bottom of his tank, having a hard time breathing and righting himself.
Sigh.
Poor Hector.

Clark and Hector have been home for over a year now, can you beat that?
They are the best fish (besides Percy, may he rest in peace) ever.
When I'm feeling down, they always manage to cheer me up.

Clark - He's a little greedy gus, wanting to eat every time I turn on the kitchen light. Sometimes he almost jumps out of the tank if he thinks I'm about to feed him. He's more active than Hector, but he also takes a little longer to 'wake up' if the light's been out and I turn it on in the evening.
He changed color from when I got him to now, but I still think he is the fattest, most mischevious goldfish I've ever known.

Hector - A most patient little fish. I hope he forgives me for being so fish-keeping inept his first weeks in the house. He's had some major health challenges this past year, which has really worried me, but so far he has overcome them without any lasting problems, except a couple unsightly scars, but hey, that's character-building, right?
He isn't very active, preferring to stay in one place close to Clark's tank most of the time. He's not much of an eater but he makes up for it in scavenging. He's very good at scavenging.
The fish have made my apartment seem more like a home this past year.
It's nice to come home from a trip and see them waiting for me (to feed them. I know the score!)

Do goldfish like team sports?
I think the answer to that question is yes.
At any rate, Clark and Hector are HUGE Red Sox fans.
They lit their Red Sox candle and listened to the game with me tonight.
We lost, but the fish and I think we still have a chance!

Transformation

Mister Clark is now completely orange, except for a thin black line over his mouth (fish moustache!). He is still just as bratty and energetic as always.

Hector is still being his sweet yet twitchy self. The other day his folder was moved and he started thrashing around until we put the folder back. Poor little guy.

I got some new tubing the other day so next time I clean the tanks they'll get fresh air tubes.

Colorfast or...?

I noticed last week that Clark is losing his brilliant color. My book says not to worry, that it happens to older fish, but I can't help it. I worry. A lot. He still has a luster, so I know he's healthy, but still.
I hope he's okay!

Square One

I think I am back to square one when it comes to Hector's health. He still has the white patch on his side (Ich? old injury? So hard to tell) and he has been pretty twitchy whenever he sees movement in his peripheral vision (do fish have peripheral vision?). I just stood a folder up around his tank so he won't be bothered when I walk by.
It isn't the best solution, because it means I can't keep an eye on him and Clark from the living room anymore.
I am trying to keep the lights low and the movement to a minimum so that they can relax a little.

Hopefully Healthy!

Hector is looking better so hopefully the white spot he still has on his side is just a scar or something in the process of healing. With the warmer weather I’ve been trying to keep the shades half-drawn so the fish won’t overheat when they are home by themselves.

Clark is still a little chubster, and he always wants me to feed him.

I might get them some freeze dried worms or something like that for a treat.

The tanks are clean and have new filters in them. I love the filters and the fish love the bubbles. They swim through the bubbles all the time.

I think Hector has the Ich.

I got some drops to put in the water to hopefully kill the parasite. Poor little Hector.
Tomorrow night I have to clean the tanks and give them both some more drops just to follow up.

All is well in Fishland

Clark moved in to his new fishbowl and now harmony replaces aggression on the kitchen counter.

The fish enjoyed a quiet weekend since I was away.
The three day feeder ended up working out great.
A Tip: make sure to have plenty of filtration/aeration to keep it from choking the tank.

More pretty fishies. Clark had to move to the coffee pot because he was beating up Hector. Now they live in identical tanks next to each other.
